President George W. Bush and the u.s economy slowdown

President George W. Bush said on Friday the U.S economy is in a slowdown but tax rebates that will start hitting consumers' bank accounts next week, should help. Bush is trying to urge taxpayers to contact the federal government about their eligibility for rebates amounting to as much as $600 per adult and $300 per child, depending on their income.

teen voters understanding voting value.

Voters under 29 were the first to anoint Barack Obama as their candidate, Which means teens are the cause of history and change in the making. Reversing a general decline that began in 1972, youth turnout leap in 2004, and in the early contests in this primary season it was up sharply. We might all remember diddys "VOTE OR DIE" campaign back in 2004, which lead to more and more teens understanding the importance and value of voting. as i read on in a NYTIMES article, the write truly believes that some 16 year olds have the maturity to cast vote.

Similarly, 16-year-olds who want to start voting should be able to obtain an “early voting permit” from their high schools upon passing a simple civics course similar to the citizenship test. Besides increasing voter registration, this system would reinforce the notion of voting as a privilege and duty as well as a right — without imposing any across-the-board literacy tests for those over 18. -Anya Kamenetz.

this kinda does sound cool, but at the age of 16 some kids are just "going with the flow" with what there peers say and they don't giving a flying hoot about government since they don't really know much about it. To me voting is privilege, i get to cast a vote from my own mind and i have a duty to let the united sates know how i feel. Maye their are some political savvy 16 year olds out there that feel the same way i do. but the wait to be 18 might just make them smarter on politics.

house passes new survillance bill.

Friday's vote came after House Republicans forced a rare, late-night secret session of Congress on Thursday to discuss the bill. The House on Friday approved the bill that would set rules and regulations for the government's eavesdropping on phone calls and e-mails in the United States. This bill faces a veto threat from President Bush. The president's main objection is that the bill does not protect lawsuits the telecommunications companies receives, because they allowed the government to eavesdrop on their customers without a court's permission after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. About 40 lawsuits have been filed against telecommunications companies by people stating the companies violated wiretapping and privacy laws. The lawsuits have been combined and are waiting action before a single federal judge in California. The vote sent the bill to the Senate, which has passed its own version that includes the legal immunity for telecoms companies that Bush is demanding. Without that provision, House Republicans said, the companies won't cooperate with U.S. intelligence.
"Seems like house leaders are more interested in investigating our intelligence professionals than giving them the tools that are needed for them to protect us." -President George W. Bush

This whole eavesdropping on the residents of the U.S seems to be a violation of privacy. America is the land of the free, so were is our freedom? they should find a better way to investigating terrorism. they torture humans, they violate our privacy, whats next for America next action?

Obama still standing strong

After the results of March 4th primary elections democratic candidate Barrack Obama is still standing strong and has a big reason to. Even though Clinton won Texas, Ohio, and Rhode Island; and Obama only won Vermont. The battle of the democratic presidency candidate is still not over, and has a long way to go. Obama stated powerful words during his speech before the results of teas were in "No matter what happens tonight, we have nearly the same delegate lead as we did this morning, and we are on our way to winning this nomination." When Obama finally took to the podium, his was the stiffest lip of all. His win streak was broken but his passion to be presidency is not. i was very shocked that Clinton won 3 states and Obama only one state. the delegated votes are very close and her is no clear winner. The next primary election for both parties which i believe will be held in Mississippi, still will not give a clear results of who is really closer to becoming the nominee. even from now till June it will be a close completion between both Clinton and Obama.

change the military's drinking age?

so as you may know to join the army and to die for your country you have to be at least 18 years old, and to be able to drink you must be 21 years old in most states. today  there is a new generation of American army troops who can vote but can not buy a beer. For state representative Flecther Smith democrat for Greenville in South Carolina said "that doesn't make any sense." I completely agree, this does not make any sense what so ever. many 18 years die at war and they never even reached the legal age limit to drink. Flecther Smith is trying to make a proposal from a house subcommittee a bill that would exempt military personal ages 18 to 20 years old from the state's minimum age for purchasing and possessing alcoholic beverages of being 21 years old. this proposal is targeted to treat the military to feel like actual adults and heros theta Americans say they are. "if they can take a shot on the battle field, they can be able to take a shot at the bar." check out the rest of the article.

Waterboarding, a violation of the eighth amendment?

So today in government class we learned about The Constitutions 27 Amendments, and amendment number eight says '"No cruel or unusual punishment" what would you call stimulation drowning? this technique is used on detainees in such places like Abu Gharib in Iraq. it is done by United States military to interrogate terrorism. Waterboarding involves strapping down a prisoner, placing a cloth over his face and pouring him with water to simulate the sensation of drowning. The CIA banned its use of waterboarding nearly five years ago. Now five years later they want to use this method again. Is it because the methods they use now are not as affective? In this link you will be able to see a youtube video demonstrating waterboarding the interrogation method. The White house recently stated waterboarding is legal and that President Bush could authorize the CIA to resume using the simulated-drowning method under extraordinary circumstances. As i read an article in the latimes wednesday february 7 2008, "The White House comments came one day after CIA Director Michael V. Hayden testified publicly for the first time that the agency had used waterboarding on Al Qaeda suspects in 2002 and 2003. He also identified three prisoners, including self-proclaimed Sept. 11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, who he said were the only detainees subjected to the method." Bush might consider reauthorizing waterboarding or other harsh techniques in extreme cases, such as when there is belief that an attack might be coming.
